Mums Make Things Happen - Mothers Day special

HAPPY MOTHERS DAY! To all the Mums past, present and the future, today is one of those days where we get a chance to sleep in or stay in bed for that extra minute, breakfast in bed and enjoy all the hand made gifts (I love my plastic jewellery!) from our children. It's the best! Then again, so is every day as a Mum, right? ;-)

Talk about Active Living! I was delighted to receive an email from the Move Nourish Believe team last month who wanted to feature me in their Mums Make It Happen campaign, big love to Lorna and the girls you rock!

Here's the transcript of the interview:

With four children under the age of nine, it’s hard to fathom how Dani Stevens finds the time to breath, let alone blog… but equipped with a decent dose of determination and motivation, she gets by just fine! We first featured this super mum on MNB after we were inspired by her blog, Fitness Food and Style and how she managed to shed the 90 kgs she gained collectively over her four pregnancies. Dani is constantly on a mission to inspire others through Active Living, it’s no wonder she came to mind when we were rounding up the most inspiring mummas for Mother’s Day…

MOTTO OR MANTRA YOU LIVE OR WORK BY:

I’m a doer and pretty much like to #makethingshappen

A LOT OF NEW MUMS CAN FEEL INADEQUATE AND SELF-CONSCIOUS ABOUT WORKING OUT, WHAT’S YOUR ADVICE TO THEM?

It’s so easy to get overwhelmed at the thought of working out when so much else is going on. My advice is to keep it really simple. Make a commitment to move your body just 15 minutes per day. It can be as simple as going for walks outside with the baby in the pram, or find a place at home while bubs is sleeping and do a quick 15 minutes workout which involves interval training which is a series of low to high mini-workouts interspersed with quick rest periods. Start with 40 seconds of heels kicks, followed by 20 seconds of marching on the spot, repeat 15 times to get to the 15 minutes and watch the sweat and fat burn fast. The best part about this is that it will continue to work even hours post a workout.

HOW DO YOU MANAGE TO WORKOUT WITH YOUR LITTLE ONES RUNNING AROUND?

That’s the best part of motherhood! It’s our 4 little kids that keep my heart rate pumping as we play kiss chasy around the house or a park, we build obstacle courses with cushions and pillows around the home, and go climb up and down trees. When there are kids around, you are never short on fitness activities – you just have to get into with them.

SLEEP DEPRIVATION IS COMMON AMONGST MUMS, HOW DO YOU MUSTER UP THE MOTIVATION TO MOVE EVERYDAY?

Moving throughout our day is paramount as well as eating whole foods to keep us energised. Of course there are nights where kids have interrupted sleeps, which impacts on our day. I say, grab a nanna nap whenever you can to recharge and plan at least a short 4 minute tabata session to boost back your mojo! You will be surprised how much you feel alive as the adrenalin increases your energy level to reboot your day!

WHY DO YOU THINK IT’S SO IMPORTANT FOR WOMEN AND MUMS IN PARTICULAR TO UNITE AS A SISTERHOOD AND EMPOWER EACH OTHER?

We all have a unique story to share, we all can learn so much from one another and support each other. Women today are working hard at all aspects of their lives. We are doing what inspires us, pursuing our personal passions and doing work we love. That’s why I feel as mothers and sisters we need to have a platform to empower, motivate and to encourage each other daily, so ensure you connect with like minded sisters today to keep you on track. One of my all time favourite quotes is: “Girls compete with each other, women empower one another”

CAN YOU SHARE ONE OF YOUR FAVOURITE NOURISHING MEALS THAT THE WHOLE FAMILY LOVES?

We love our healthy chicken nuggets. Simple, quick and very nourishing. Simply coat your chicken pieces in yogurt, coat in wholemeal breadcrumbs or lepin flakes for those that prefer gluten free and place on baking paper on a tray and bake at 180C degrees until golden brown.
